MORRISTOWN, NJ — Where will you be at 1:05 pm Thursday? When the New York Yankees take the mound on Opening day Thursday, all eyes will be looking for number 77, Delbarton's own Anthony Volpe. At 21 years old, he is one of the youngest position players to ever make the team's Opening Day roster, and the youngest starting shortstop since Derek Jeter debuted in 1995.
Mickey Mantle, Ben Chapman, Joe Pepitone and Frankie Crosetti were the four younger starting Yanks.
In an interview with MLB.com last year, Volpe talked about idolizing Yankees legend Derek Jeter.
“How could Derek Jeter not be my favorite?" Volpe said. "I remember him more for his farewell tour than anything else. We traveled to Minneapolis for his last All-Star Game, and that was an unforgettable experience. Although the 2009 championship was the only one I was around for, Derek was my idol, a larger-than-life person to me.
Volpe was the first-round pick of the New York Yankees in the 2019 amateur draft, with the 30th overall pick.
