MONTVILLE, NJ – The Montville Broncos Wrestling program completed their ‘22-‘23 wrestling season with team and individual accomplishments to be recognized. The program is filled with wrestlers from all five elementary schools as well as Lazar Middle School. The team, wrestlers, parents, and coaches should be recognized for all their accomplishments this season.
This season the Montville Broncos wrestled a total of 40 matches and finished with a record of 35-5 which included matches in the Tri-County League, Northwest League, 29th Annual Montville Duals, Flemington Duals, and South Plainfield Super Quad. This team won the Montville Duals for the second consecutive year, finished as a team in third place in the Tri-County Team Playoff Duals, and finished in third place in the end of the year individual Northwest Tournament.
“This team was an extremely fun group to coach and the families were a close group that was dedicated to the success of the Broncos Wrestlers,” said Head Coach Billy Templeton.
Individually the Bronco Wrestlers accomplished so much this season.
3 Individual Northwest Champions – Justin Orellana, Vincent Kapral, and Lucas Jones.
3 Tri-County Champions – Justin Orellana, Tristan Meytrott, and Vincent Kapral.
19 State Qualifiers, 10 State Medalists, 6 State Finalists, and 2 State Champions.
State Medalists include: Flynn Longo 8th, Nick Drake 8th, Lucas Jones 6th, and Arianna Sottile 5th.
State Finalist finishing as NJ State Runner ups: Rosie Baldanza, Hudson Meytrott, Vincent Kapral, and Jake Baginski.
State Champions for 2022-2023: Justin Orellana as he won his first State Championship while Sophia Massefski became a two-time NJ State Champion.
The Broncos hosted their annual banquet at Lake Valhalla Club on March 24. There were over 150 people in attendance to celebrate and honor this team. Every year the Broncos award a wrestler with the very prestigious Sam Cali MVP award which is designated to honor our former Bronco wrestler and family. This award goes to the wrestler who demonstrates the high level of dedication and commitment to the Montville program throughout the Tri-County League. Sam Cali was himself a five-time tri-county champion which is the most in program history.
This year’s Sam Cali winners are Tristan Meytrott and Sophia Massefski
This team was a special group as the Broncos are graduating 11 8th-graders and sending them to Montville Township High School. The commitment and dedication were seen throughout the season on every level of the team including the coaches, wrestlers, parents, and town support. The coaching staff appreciates all the help and support from everyone including our Bronco Board members (Allan Meytrott, Skip Breslow, and Bruce Weil), town Rec Commission (Lori Dent), and the town DPW for the continuous mat cleaning and mat moving.
