NJ Antiques Dealer Sells Vintage Radio on "Pawn Stars" TV Show

Published on: 03/28/2023

Description

SOMERVILLE, NJ -Antiques dealer Shaun Daley, co-owner of Gallery on Main, rolled the dice 16 months ago, booked a flight to Las Vegas and packed his bags, including a vintage 1930s Mickey Mouse radio which he hoped to sell on the popular History Channel TV show "Pawn Stars."

His gamble paid off handsomely.

Daley appears on camera with Chumlee Russell, one of the "Pawn Stars" regulars, asking $1,250 for the radio, eventually settling on a sale price of $700.

At the end of the segment, Daley reveals he paid $50 for the radio at an estate sale in New Jersey.

Daley was watching TV last week when he began to receive text messages from friends telling him that he was on television. The producers of the show had not informed him that the episode in which he appeared was finally scheduled to be aired. (See link below).

The Model 411 radio was manufactured by Emerson from 1933-36 under license with the Walt Disney Company. Highly-desired by vintage Disney collectors, the radio had sat on a shelf in Daley's store for several months.

He had also advertised the radio online, with this description:

"Very rare, all original, the Emerson Model 411 novelty radio was manufactured and distributed by Emerson under an exclusive agreement with the Walt Disney Company, signed in the fall of 1933.

"It was one of three Mickey Mouse souvenir sets introduced at the time that were part of Emerson's line-up for 1934. In words taken from an announcement in Radio Retailing, dated October 1933, one of these sets was "black with silver trimming," another was "ivory wth light green trimming" and the third, the model 411 as seen here, "walnut with carved Mickey Mouse characters.

"The 411's panels are not actually carved as suggested but were manufactured using a pressed wood composite calle "SyrocoWood," a trademark of the Syracuse Ornamental Company. The three versions of the Mickey Mouse radio each had an introductory price of $25.

"The 411 is generally categorized as being of the 1933-34 model year. However, the 1934 (first) version of the 411 utilizes the A-6 chassis whereas mne embodies chasis U4C, which Emerson introduced later in 1936. The 411 schematic in the writer's manual in fact lists both chassis types as original to the set. Therefore, my 411 is a late version from 1936.

"Both variants turn up from time to time on internet auction sites. I have noticed differences in the knobs between them, but otherwise the cabinets appear to be the same.

"Advertising for the model 411 from December of 1936 shows the list price as $14.95, a significant reduction from its introductory price of $25 in the fall of 1933.

"In all likelihood, the 411 was offered for continuous sale between 1933 and 1936, with a chassis upgrade for the 1936 model year."

"Pawn Stars" chronicles the daily activities at the World Famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop, a 24-hour family business opened in 1989 and originally operated by patriarch Richard "Old Man" Harrison, his son Rick Harrison, Rick's son Corey "Big Hoss" Harrison, and Corey's childhood friend, Austin "Chumlee" Russell.

The series debuted on July 26, 2009 and depicts the staff's interactions with customers, who bring in a variety of artifacts to sell or pawn, shown haggling over the price, and discussing its historical background, with narration provided by the staff.
