Former employee allegedly involved in series of thefts from local post offices

NEW JERSEY - A woman from Hudson County, New Jersey, identified as 29-year-old Zyeama Johnson of Jersey City, has been charged with burglarizing two U.S. Post Offices on six separate occasions, according to U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger. Johnson, who was formerly employed at one of the post offices she allegedly targeted, appeared today in Newark federal court before U.S. Magistrate Judge Cathy Waldor and was subsequently released on a $100,000 unsecured bond.

The court documents detail that Johnson's series of burglaries occurred on January 10, 13, 21, 26, and February 3, 2023, at the first post office location, and on February 7 at a second location. It is alleged that on each occasion, Johnson broke into the facilities, stole mail, and then loaded the stolen items into her vehicle before fleeing the scene. She was arrested by law enforcement officers as she exited the second post office on February 7.

Each count of burglary that Johnson faces is punishable by up to five years in prison and fines reaching $250,000.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service in Newark and the Jersey City Police Department conducted the investigation leading to Johnson’s arrest. Assistant U.S. Attorney Chana Zuckier of the General Crimes in Newark is representing the government in this case.

While Johnson faces serious allegations, it is essential to remember that these charges are merely accusations, and she is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
