GARDEN CLUB OF MORRISTOWN SALE PROMOTES NATIVE PLANTS

April is NJ Native Plant Month

Question: What do Mother’s Day and Native Plants have in common?

Answer: The Garden Club of Morristown’s Annual Plant Sale!

The Garden Club of Morristown’s annual plant sale will be held Saturday, May 11,  2024 — Mother’s Day weekend– at the New Vernon Firehouse.

The extensive collection of plants will include varieties for the novice to the advanced gardener, including a diverse collection of native plants, nativars, perennials, houseplants, tomatoes, peppers, and planted Mother’s Day baskets. Many members also contribute unique perennial plants from their gardens for sale.

In 2022, the Garden Club of America (GCA) launched a nationwide, multidisciplinary, cross-committee collaboration to promote native plants by formally establishing a Native Plant Month in all 50 states.

The Garden Club of Morristown, a member of GCA, supports its efforts to amplify the importance of native plants and biodiversity.

Through these efforts, April of each year has been officially designated “New Jersey Native Plant Month” by a joint resolution of the New Jersey legislature. With all this talk, you may wonder, why all the excitement about natives?

The simple answer is that native plants help conserve and filter water, provide habitat for native wildlife, protect soil resources, and reduce the costs and environmental impacts associated with fertilizers and pesticides.

An informative guide entitled Going Native, produced by Jersey-Friendly Yards, will be available at the sale or is available online.

Take a break from shopping and stop by our “Celebrating Natives” area where you can find additional educational information on northeast natives and their many uses and benefits.

The May 11 Plant Sale runs from 8:30 am – 3 pm, with knowledgeable club members on hand ready to help with your shopping and plant questions.

The purpose of the Garden Club of Morristown is to promote interest in gardening, preserve and encourage plant and bird life, and encourage civic beautification and conservation of our natural resources.
