Description

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — Motorists in East Brunswick will need to navigate overnight detours on Route 18 due to closures scheduled for traffic signal installations. This work is part of a substantial $86.1 million drainage and pavement rehabilitation project, funded by federal resources.

Scheduled Closures

Starting tonight, Monday, April 15, from 11 p.m. to 4:30 a.m., and continuing Tuesday night, Route 18 northbound will be closed and detoured between Racetrack Road and Milltown Road. Concurrently, Route 18 southbound will experience closures from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. on the same nights.

The closures will extend into later in the week, with Route 18 northbound being closed and detoured from Rues Lane to Racetrack Road beginning Wednesday night, April 17, and Thursday night, April 18, from 11 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. Route 18 southbound will also be closed in the same section from 11 p.m. each night until 6 a.m. the following morning.

Detour Information

Detailed detour routes will be posted to guide drivers around the closed sections of Route 18. Motorists are advised to follow these detours and plan for possible delays during these times.

Project Details

The ongoing rehabilitation project includes milling and paving, enhancements to drainage systems and stormwater basins, utility relocations, and the installation of new sidewalks and ADA-compliant curb ramps. Additionally, guide rail upgrades and intersection improvements are planned throughout the affected four-and-a-half-mile stretch of Route 18.

This extensive work aims to improve safety, accessibility, and traffic flow on one of Middlesex County’s major roadways, with completion targeted for fall 2026.

For updates on this project and real-time travel information, drivers are encouraged to visit NJDOT’s traffic information website at www.511nj.org. The New Jersey Department of Transportation urges travelers to exercise caution in construction zones and to consider alternate routes during the project’s duration.
